The first independent ticket for ANUSA has launched tonight. Su-En Hia is running for Clubs Officer in the 2022 ANUSA election. She joins Phoenix O’Neill (Grassroots) and Elijah Smith (Get Sh!t Done) in the race for the newly created position. Hia has no political affiliation and aims to better support clubs through the role to improve their visibility, membership and reach.
Since 2019, Hia has served on the Science Society executive, including as the Vice-President and then President. She claims these roles have given her “unique insight into how clubs should best be supported to contribute to the ANU’s social environment, along with how often they are overlooked by ANUSA.”
Hia primarily seeks to “bring clubs to the forefront of the ANU social scene, by providing them with more support, training and funding to allow them to run more events.” She aspires to improve visibility of clubs through a weekly or fortnightly calendar of their events, update club details to disseminate to students and to ensure a smooth Market Day through “clear and consistent communication.” Su-En sees clubs as “an underutilized part of the ANU and it is crucial to promote and support them effectively if we are to have a thriving social scene.”
Hia proposes an O-Week grant to give clubs “the freedom to run their own O-Week events.” Alongside the social committee, Hia hopes to provide clubs with the support and volunteers to run events. Hia anticipates that her policies will aid clubs in growing their membership and activity to “allow more social events to be run throughout the University and term.”
Another objective of Hia’s candidacy is to reintroduce free or subsidised up-skilling programs, which could include RSA, First Aid, and barista training. Su-En envisions offering these programs to all students to assist in job-seeking, while also helping club executives in planning large events.
Finally, Hia seeks to improve event accessibility. She outlines plans for “creating a grant for equity funding” as well as “running effective online events” and “giving both the Clubs role and student clubs a greater presence and visibility through consultation hours and better communication.” Additionally, Hia hopes to work with the Disabilities Department, particularly on major events such as Friday Night Party and Market Days. Hia also proposes accessibility training for club executives to improve accessibility across student events.
