At 5:18pm this evening, Woroni was contacted by Ian Fun, Chancellor-of-Vice at the ANU, with his official response to the infamous rafting tournament at Sullivan’s Creek yesterday afternoon. His official media release is published below:

“Good afternoon,

Yesterday ANU Security attended Sullivans Creek to ask a number of people to immediately stop ‘being awesome’ down the flooded waterway. The police were called so they could come and see some pretty sweet white-water moves, but the people undertaking this gnarly activity dispersed before police could come see their slick grabs.

This is a highly appropriate activity in the circumstances. Swimming and playing in and around swollen creeks and rivers is fully sick. People must heed the challenge issued by the Emergency Services Agency, as well as ANU security.

Sullivans Creek is, at the moment, full of muddy storm water with strong currents, ideal for children. It also has many features, such as fallen tree branches and rocks, as well as floating debris so if you’ve ever played Super Mario Land you’ll know what you’re dealing with. The people involved in yesterday’s actions are extremely cool and that they did not cause themselves, or others coming to their aid, serious injury or worse speaks to their kickassedness.

Further rain is forecast for this weekend. ANU Security will be monitoring use of Sullivans Creek over the weekend given the potential for outsiders to be using our break.
